I like music. I like to listen to a lot of music. And I think you need to give an album 3 listens before you judge it.
Here’s why:
- We tend to dislike music the first time we hear it
- Music will grow on you
- We tend to like and listen to the same kinds of music…we need to be stretched
- Partake of all an artist has offered (lyrics, music, artwork)…don’t just listen to hits
- A great album is an album full of great songs, not just one or two
- Take time to digest the message and spirit of an artist…it will teach you
If after this process you still don’t like it, your opinion is valid.

This is good advice, now go listen to John Legend.

You got me on that one, bro.

Like the process and points you make Dave. My method is pretty close I always give an album 4 spins before making a final verdict on it. I also like to use different mediums to listen to the albums through for maximum intake. Isolated Headphones are my weapon of choice as well as the car stereo. Its good also sometimes to not let the back catalog of the artist influence their current work.

Helpful pointers, Luke. I think my fav is the car stereo. Something about driving and cranking music is therapeutic to me.
Jason says
Totally agree, David. I try to put myself in the writer’s shoes, they put the music on the album for a reason – I try to listen to it with that perspective.
David Santistevan says
That’s cool, Jason. I’ve never thought of it like that. Very cool.
