One of the best things we’ve done with our worship team is utilize a click track and live loops. It improves the quality of your band while introducing new sonic textures.
But let me add a disclaimer: you don’t have to use click tracks and loops in order to have an effective worship team. It is an option. So many other issues are more important, but I’m simply sharing with you what has helped our team improve from a musical perspective.
I would encourage you to try it.
In this post I’d like to introduce you to a few great online resources for making this happen at your church. I recently did a post on Creating a Click Track Using Garageband, which you may want to check out. Here follows some of the best resources I’ve found.
Essential Loop Websites
Here we go:
1. MultiTracks
MultiTracks is an incredible site that goes beyond simply using clicks and loops in worship. They have sound patches from worship keys players like Peter James (Hillsong) and Ian Mcintosh (Jesus Culture) as well as plenty of other resources to make your music tighter. I’ve interviewed Will Doggett on the podcast and just love everything they are doing. Download their iPhone/iPad app Playback and start using loops right away.
2. LOOP COMMUNITY
Download loops, submit loops, all to your heart’s content. I love seeing how many loops are created in Propellerhead Reason (affiliate link), the software I use to create my own. There are some great sounding, easy to implement loops over here. You can follow them on Twitter here.
5 Steps To A Simple Click Track/Loop Setup
Our loop/click setup is rather simple. And to be honest, there’s hundreds of ways to do this. Here’s a simple setup that anyone (with in ear monitors) should be able to do.
- Choose your loop device – You can use whatever is most convenient for you. A laptop, an iPad, an iPhone, etc. Got it? Good. Let’s move on.
- Set up your loop device – Whether you are using GarageBand, Reason, Logic, or iTunes, you’ll want to set up your loop program so your audio is split LEFT and RIGHT. You want the LOOP in one side and the CLICK in the other. It’s your choice!
- Gather the necessary gear
- 1/8″ to split 1/4″ cable
- 2 direct boxes
- Plug it in – You’ll want to take your split cable and plug the 1/8″ end into your loop device. Then, come out of there into both direct boxes with the 1/4″ ends.
- Configure – Now, back at the sound board you should be receiving two signals into two separate channels – one with loop and one with click. You want your click track to appear ONLY in the in-ear monitors. You want the loop to appear in both the in-ear monitors and the main mix.
