More often than I like to admit, I forget stuff.
I forget to bring what I was supposed to bring. I forget to send an email. I forget to communicate an important detail.
Sometimes, I forget the lyrics to a song while I’m singing the song (Has that ever happened to you? By the way, you might want to share your embarrassing moment over here.)
Of course, this shouldn’t happen. All I need to do is write it down and review my task list. I need to practice. But I’m just being honest…I still forget.
Maybe you do as well. But in this brief blog post I want to declare something that you simply cannot forget.
I want to shout from the rooftops a core idea for a worship leader that is essential. Without it, you’ve lost your way. Without it, you’re simply spinning wheels.
Here it is. Are you ready?
A worship leader can never forget the wonder of the Gospel.
The moment the Gospel becomes “old news” is the moment you lose your relevance as a leader (tweetable).
Christ has died. Think about that. Right now. Breathe it in. Deep.
Christ has risen. Think about that. Right now. Breathe it in. Deep.
Christ will come again. Think about that. Right now. Breathe it in. Deep.
Wow. The miracle of the Gospel must remain a miracle in our hearts and minds. Without it, our leadership will grow stale, irrelevant, cold, and lifeless. The Gospel cannot be relegated to a category with brushing your teeth, eating breakfast, getting dressed, or cutting your toenails (you’re welcome).
Remembering the Gospel is not a mindless activity. It needs to be a purposeful, daily act of worship. Jerry Bridges said, “I preach the Gospel to myself every day.”
Every day, gaze in wonder upon all that God has done for you in Christ Jesus. Even if the tears of joy aren’t there. Even in the darknest night of your soul. Even when you feel like doing something else.
Pause.
Reflect.
Worship.
Tell someone about it.
This isn’t just how you remain a relevant worship leader. It’s the only way to live fully alive.
Question: What about you? Would would it take for you to preach the Gospel to yourself – to remember the wonder of the Christ every single day? How would this influence your life and ministry?

Thanks for a simple, however essential reminder of Who and what is really important. One of the scariest moments is playing the keys and suddenly forget how the next song goes…yikes! God always comes through!

ABSOLUTELY! I was just reminding our worship team this morning about the song “O Come Let Us Adore Him” and how we are bringing the “Faithful” in to adore Jesus Christ! For He alone is worthy! And, wow, what a great reminder that we must continually be cherishing the Gospel. I can’t imagine attempting to lead worship without first cherishing our Savior, but then again, I’m guilty of that all the time!!!
Thanks for the awesome reminder and I rejoice in all that God is doing in you!

This is amazing, God is talking to us, i feel really blessed by this words, thank you so much David Santistevan for reminding us this is so important, i’m starting reading the posts in this blog, it helps me to understand lots of things about worship, music, and God. I’m not a worship leader and i’m not a musician yet, i’m practising to start serving with a beautiful instrument, God is calling me for the ministry and this helps me so much, i’ll share this with musicians in my church. It’s crazy but i’m writing from Argentina!!!!! God bless you so much and keep on with this, God is using you to talk people in the other side of the world!!
