Want to increase your confidence as a worship leader?
Find a quiet place.
Wash your heart in the water of His word.
Fix your gaze upon Jesus.
Look steadily upon His worth, His beauty, His kindness, His love, His excellence.
When you feel tempted to move on to more “productive” tasks, force yourself to stay a little longer.
There’s nothing more productive in all the world.
Your confidence as a worship leader stems from your confidence in God.
Because He is who He says He is, you do what He’s called you to do.
What A Worship Leader Does
You lead worship because you are convinced – convinced that Jesus is worth living and dying for.
Convinced that He is brighter than the shine of this world.
Convinced that He is worthy of undying affection, praise, and willing obedience.
You call people to love Him. You stir affections for the Creator. You are a voice – calling people to rediscover the reason for their existence.
Think about it. It’s not really about you – your voice, your ability, your looks, your stage presence, your anything.
There’s too much “you” in that.
Rather, the best worship leaders are obsessed with Jesus. Simple to say, easy to divert from.
Jesus never gets old. The truth never goes out of style. But our hearts have a tendency to wander.
Don’t Forget This
Consider this post a reminder to lift your eyes today. Look upon the Savior, stand in awe, and cry out for fresh revelation.
We should never stop seeing the Savior – discovering the Savior – falling more in love with the Savior.
Life is discovery.
May our wanderings be a daily reminder that there’s nothing more important than keeping the wonder of God before our eyes.
Because the more we do this, the more our congregations will see Him.
And you can be confident: that is what they need.

Welp, I’m not a worship leader, but I follow your blog anyway. (My son is a worship leader, and I serve in creative and youth ministry.) This is powerful advice, powerful words. Thank you for the reminder. It’s where I need to live right now.

Thanks Jenna! I’m trying to live here myself.

Well, first, thank you for voicing what I consider to be the secret to leading worship according to God’s standards and not ours. A heart passionately pursuing all of who God is daily.
I love what you wrote in this post, so many to choose from but ” the best worship leaders are obsessed with Jesus”…this is what confirms what I read in God’s word from people like Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Nehemiah, Isaiah, mighty men of God who were broken for God’s heart and purpose.
If you are a young worship leader, your talent is just a tool, God uses the heart and your character. The talent it the flashlight, your character is the “brightness” of HIS light shining from knowing him.
Trust me, if he can make a donkey speak, he can raise up anyone to sing and play, he desires you to be (near to him) and in THAT relationship, amazing things can be fulfilled through your life.

David, I have been at this a long time, but I love reading your posts!
This is as pure and simple and true as it gets. If you never wrote another post you have said all that needs to be said.
However, I hope you will keep writing because we always need to be reminded and redirected and inspired afresh. These are things you do for us every week. Thank you!
David Santistevan says
Thanks so much, Mark!
