Ever wonder what worship pastors do all day?
Because everyone knows worship leaders and pastors only work on Sunday, right?
Well, in today’s podcast we talk about this very thing. I had a conversation with Jared Welch, worship pastor at Life Church in Memphis, TN.
This podcast is the first of many – conversations with everyday, local church worship leaders and pastors who are serving their churches well with heart, passion, and excellence.

First off, I cannot imagine organizing worship for 4 separate campuses. It makes my head spin thinking about it. God bless you, Jared, for being so committed to His calling for you.
I am the contemporary worship leader for a local church in northwest Tennessee (about 3 hours north of Memphis). I started out as a volunteer in order for our church to begin holding two services on Sunday morning, but the church has decided to compensate me for planning, organizing and rehearsing our worship team on a weekly basis.
While I have been a volunteer musician for nearly 5 years, I have only been the “leader” for 6 weeks and it has been a humbling but rewarding experience. God has made it abundantly clear that my most important task week in and week out is to be prayed up, studying His word and listening for Him to guide. There have been multiple times when I have tried to force my plan for a service and nothing seem to work right. And every time, when I step back and let Him be MY leader, it all comes together.
My second most important task is to be prepared. How can I ask my team to display excellence if I walk into rehearsal without knowing the ins and outs of every song? Without having a plan for transitions? Without knowing all the little extra things that are included during the service that week?
I am so glad I decided to answer God’s call for me to be a worship leader. He has put together an outstanding team for me to work with; they are all dedicated, professional and talented beyond words. I am so thankful that we get to be a part of what He is doing in our community.

Jacob, it’s super exciting to hear how God is using you in your local church. I love how your most important tasks have to do with getting your heart ready. Keep up the good work!
